Our fake columns look like the real thing – but how do they work?

Fake columns flank the entrance to this home's large front porch.

Fake columns added the look of real stone to this porch without the headaches.

One question we’re frequently asked about our fake columns is: How do you install them?

The answer depends on the specific type of column you purchase – and we have detailed installation instructions for all of them on our website.

But some aspects are the same throughout – the most fundamental of these being that our beams are installed on wooden posts. We recommend a 4″ or 5″ post, cemented into the ground.

This takes a little bit of handiwork, but isn’t beyond the skills of most focused homeowners.

Once the post is installed, different columns install in different ways.

Our Ashford models, for example, have stack sections inside which you cut to size with a carpentry jigsaw.

Then the columns are simply slotted over the installation post, and filled with a few inches of concrete for a totally secure foundation.

Norwich columns, in contrast, are referred to as ‘wraps’.

These are polyurethane corner panels which slot together to form a column.

Norwich fake column wraps install onto a framework built around the installation post.

These need to be installed on a wooden base frame, which requires slightly more work because you’ll have to frame out the foundation first.

Carlton sleeves slip directly over a 6"x6" post.

Carlton sleeves slip directly over a 6″x6″ post.

Carlton sleeves work in a similar way, except you attach them directly to a 6″x6″ installation post – installing them with regular wood screws and caulk.

Because they slot together like jigsaw pieces, the finished look is totally seamless; and it’s difficult to tell they’re not made from real carefully stacked stone.

Whichever style of column you choose, just know that we’re here to help make sure it works for you. Our website features complete and detailed instructions on installing all these products – and we’re never more than a telephone call or email away if you need further support.

Enhancing your poolside decor is a great way to make a nice backyard environment for entertainment, dining, playing, and sun bathing.  It’s easy to add simple touches to make your experience at poolside enjoyable.  With just a little planning, you’ll be able to turn your pool deck into a comfortable extension of your home.  Before you know it, you’ll have a warm and inviting place to relax and have fun with friends.

Poolside decor can be enhanced easily, and just in time for summer.

Poolside decor can be enhanced easily, and just in time for summer.

Below are seven ideas to create a lively and enjoyable setting.

1. You can start by adding decorative interest to your pool deck by installing a border, also called a pool coping, in a vibrant color and contrasting pattern.  Some attractive styles include concrete tiling, limestone, hand-scored concrete, broom-finished concrete, and limestone.

Pool coping can serve to create an attractive borderline.

2. Decorate the area by placing plants and flowers in colorful pots in different areas around the pool deck, such as around seating areas, along the fence or poolside.  Add visual appeal by using plants with varied colors and textures.  Plants are great, too, because they can also create privacy by adding height and blocking out unwanted views.

Enhancing poolside decor is easily done by putting down flowers in planters.

3. Bring evening lighting to the pool by hanging string lights along the fence.  You can also place tiki torches around the perimeter for a more tropical look. For added effect, you can also place lighting in surrounding bushes and trees.

4. A unique way of adding appeal and character to your pool area is by hanging metal art on the back side of the house that faces the pool.  You can also add sculptures of different sizes in various places to create a more complete look.

6. Architectural elements that can enhance the look of the terrace include pillars, a trellis, and column wraps.  In particular, faux stone column wraps, with their meticulous imitation of real stone, give terrace pillars an eye-catching and impressive look.  They’re easy to install, too.  The result is an elegant new look that will lend an exquisite touch to your pool area.

7. Another decorative element you can’t forget is landscaping.  Beautiful landscaping will soften the edges of the pool deck, and provide an organic look.  Having a nicely mowed lawn and manicured bushes also provide a lovely backdrop.

While you’re planting your garden this spring, you may want to think about some decorative elements that could be added to enhance its look; elements that personalize your garden and reflect your individuality. Below are six great garden decor ideas to get you started:

Wind Chimes

Wind chimes come in all kinds of sizes, shapes and colors.  One popular type that’s easy to hang from a branch is a metal coil wind chime.  These kinds of chime designs are simple, yet unique.  Many have a colorful glass design inside the coil, with the actual chimes hanging from the bottom of the coil.  Also called wind spinner chimes, these designs are eye-catching, as they twirl in the wind while the chime sings.  Wind chimes look great among your flowers and trees, adding color and visual interest to your garden year round.

Wind chimes are a great way to add a personal touch to your garden design.

Garden Trellis

Transforming your garden into a charming sanctuary can be done easily with a trellis.  These decorative elements are typically a wooden frame of latticework that plants can grow through.  They can be splendid for your clematis or climbing roses.  They add not only visual appeal, but are also a wonderful accompaniment to outdoor living spaces.

Adding a trellis to your garden is a great way to bring charm to your yard.

Fountain

Introducing flowing water to a garden is always an excellent way to bring vivacity to the overall design, particularly with fountains. Water fountains can be large or small, and take on a variety of interesting designs.  They can be placed inside the garden or accent an entrance or perimeter.

Garden Statues

Garden sculptures and statues always give gardens unique charm.  They are a wonderful way to add more cheer to vegetable patches and flowerbeds, or lend playfulness to a corner of your yard.  Common statues are angels, leprechauns and gnomes.  Some garden statues even double as stools or birdfeeders.

A statue always adds a whimsical feel to your garden.

Bird Feeder

Bird feeders not only add beauty on their own, but they also attract birds of many kinds – bringing life to your garden with visits from humming birds and cardinals to warblers, sparrows or orioles. Types of feeders range from tables, trays and hanging tree feeders.  Successful bird attraction usually depends upon where the feeders are placed, as well as the kinds of foods you offer, because every species has a different preference.

Faux Stone Columns

Faux columns are a wonderful way to add elegance to your garden, with style variations including brick, cobblestone, river rock, castle rock, stacked stone and more.  Their wide range of attractive color choices also enable you to match the natural colors of the plants and stones in your garden.  The result is a lovely addition to your yard that showcases your garden and adds a wonderful look.  Some column styles can even be stacked to your desired height, so you can create the garden design of your dreams.

A driveway could be thought of as your home’s calling card. Typically it’s the first thing visitors and passerby see on your property, so its design should reflect how you want your home to be perceived – whether you’re going for a cozy cottage look or something luxurious and grand.

There are many types of driveways that can enhance your home’s curb appeal beyond the standard blacktop – stamped concrete, brick, cobblestone, pea stone gravel and more.

Below are images of a few kinds of driveways that you’ve likely seen before that may work nicely for your own property.

The driveway below is made with decorative bricks, and goes nicely with the brick siding on the home.  The lighter color of the driveway contrasts well with the house.

Lastly, below is a driveway with a luxurious gate flanked by faux stone columns.  Both the columns and the gate serve to differentiate both the driveway and the entire property.  The best part is that the columns are lightweight, and easy to install.  Attaching a gate to the sides of the columns is also a simple procedure.  Without the owners of the house having to replace the driveway material with a more sophisticated material, such as cobblestone or decorative brick, the columns and gate add a new elegance to the whole property.

Because fencing doesn’t always look attractive on a property all by itself, decorative fence ideas are useful to have.  While fences may set the boundaries of a property and provide security, they can also give potential visitors the impression of being unwelcome or even locked out.  They can also make the residents of the property feel fenced in.  Fences and gates on areas like decks and driveways are also better with a decorative accent.

Decorative fence ideas can be realized with cobblestone columns.

The Carlton Cobblestone columns make beautiful accents for deck fences.

That’s why fences need an extra element that creates a welcoming, hospitable feel.  With faux stone columns, creating that sensation is easy to do.  They are an affordable alternative to columns made of real stone, and have the unmistakable look of real masonry.  The bonus is that faux stone is lightweight and easy to install.  Using them as fence posts, you’ll be able to transform your property in no time.

Installing a faux column isn’t as tough as it looks.  In fact, it’s quite easy.  With the simple, step-by-step instructions that are included with these orders, you’ll be able to install them on your own in no time.

As with all of our products, there’s no need to hire a mason at all.  By following the instructions below, your column will be up and in place before you know it.

Cut out the top and bottom of your artificial ledgestone columns.

Start your stone column installation by making the necessary starting cuts.

1. Begin the installation of your stone veneer column by cutting out the top and bottom of the column/stack section.

Attached stack and column sections together as needed

Ledgestone columns and stack sections allow you to create taller columns

2. When using a stack section, turn the column upside down and place the stack section on top of the column. Drill holes in the corners and then bolt the column section together.

With a shovel or post hole digger, make a hole for your structural post

A properly set structural post will enhance the durability and lifetime of the column.

3. Dig a post hole for the structural wood portion of your faux ledgestone column. Set the post and then fill the hole with the right amount of concrete.

Fill with required amount of concrete to solidify the base of the installation.

Added concrete to the base of the ledgestone columns strengthens the construction.

4. Set your column over the structural post.

Slide your ledgestone columns over their set structural post.

The structural post gives added support to your faux stone column installation.

5. Fill the column with at least 10″ of concrete.

Level your columns and sure the cap to the top.

Your faux stone column installation is now complete!

6. Finally, level your column and then secure the cap with screws.

You now have a beautiful artificial stone column that resembles the work of a professional mason.  The look will enhance your property’s visual appeal, no doubt.
